What is ALBEDO?

The strength by which a heavenly body reflects is called ALBEDO. It can be found by dividing the sun’s energy reflected by the incident energy on the planet. Clouds can be considered as the decent reflectors of light. Clouds play an important role in increasing the reflecting strength of a planet. So, if the reflecting strength will increase then due to relation of direct proportion its ALBEDO will also increase. In other words we can say that the value of ALBEDO tells us about the atmospheric conditions present on the planet i.e. Clouds are present on the planet or not. Different planets have distinct values of ALBEDO depending upon their atmospheric conditions.

The minimum value of ALBEDO is for mercury planet. It is .06. The maximum value of ALBEDO is on Venus i.e. 0.85. But the value of ALBEDO on moon is slightly greater than that on mercury. It is .07. The value of ALBEDO shows that Venus has a cloudy atmosphere. But on the other hand it seems that there is no atmosphere present on the planet Mercury.
