What is Mass Defect?

The difference between sum of masses of protons, neutrons, electrons and actual isotopic mass of an element is called mass defect.

This mass defect occurs due to the transformation of some mass into enegy.

The transformation follows the Einstein mass energy equivalence equation.
E = mc2
